AR500 is a generic term most often associated with  abrasion resistant steel claiming to have 500 BHN hardness.

There is no industry standard for AR500 wear resistant steel.  AR500 has a hard surface about 0.020″ thick, and often is as soft as mild steel in the center of the steel.  Steel 3/8″ and heavier will have significant differences in hardness between the face and center of the steel.
